Nick and I celebrated 10 years of marriage by going on a trip to Hawaii. The kids went on a trip to Grandma's!! Wow we had such a great time. Here's a summary:
Friday, May 30: Ash and kids drive to Albuquerque; meet up with Grandma, Judy, and Michal and attend the Symphony at the zoo. It was interesting listening to the music while the animals added noises!
Saturday, May 31: Nick and Ash arrive in Lihue, Kauai on separate flights, but about the same time. Rent a car, then head to Poipu. Have famous Puka Dog (very large hot dog with fancy sauces like mango or pineapple). Then try out body boarding at the beach. I don't really get a great hang of it and am pummelled by waves too many times. Nick does alright, but realizes he needs a rash guard (he purchases one later). Drive to Anini Beach to camp. Woken up by resident roosters throughout the night.
Sunday, June 1: Walk on the beach. Nick is determined to catch a sand crab. He blocks off a hole to one, but then I am the one who is brave enough to pick it up first!! We drive to Hanalei (we didn't find Puff the Magic Dragon), and attend church there. About half of the people attending are visitors (pretty common there). At the end of the meeting, the local members stand and sing Aloha to all the visitors and members moving out of their congregation. It was beautiful.
We plan to hike to Hanakapi'ia Beach and maybe to the Falls. We think the hike will be too long all the way to the falls, but after talking to other hikers, we feel that we can't miss the falls; we are half way there! This was a pretty tough hike 5 hours round trip, and that was with a bit of jogging! There are signs warning visitors not to go near the water at Hanakapi'ia Beach due to a strong current. It scared us enought to stay out of the water. We did walk through this cave that opened up to what we'll call a Pirate's Cove. The trail that we hike is along the famous Napali Coast. You can only see the coast by hiking, by boat, or by air.
After the beach we continue on the trail to Hanakapi'ai Falls. It's a great reward after the long hike! We take a little swim under the falls.
After the hike we check out beautiful Ke'e Beach then snorkel at Tunnels Beach. Then we drive to the other side of the island and stop at Salt Pond Beach Park to camp. Again roosters help wake you up!
Monday, June 2
We take a raft trip to see the Napali Coast. We leave from Port Allen. Along the way we see dolphins and sea turtles. The coast is amazing! We also snorkel at lunch time. After the raft trip. We try body boarding again at Po'ipu Beach, have some Sushi, then head to the airport. We leave Lihue and travel to Honolulu. It's a very short flight!
